I think, unfortunately, the OP is incorrect. Fascism is extremely easy and convenient. You don't have to think, you don't have to do anything, in fact doing something is dangerous so you can just go along with the flow.
Building and maintaining a liberal progressive democracy is hard and requires eternal vigilance, but just because it is more difficult does not mean that it is wrong. It means that we are pushing up against the bounds of our evolutionary programmed instincts and behaviors. And I for one love that, perhaps someday we will be able to move past our social/political evolutionary limitations the same way we have moved past some of our biological/medical limitations (think insulin and prescription glasses)
