My friend did a lot of genealogical research on her family, and had the most blunt historian in history explain things to her like: "Out of the three sisters, Lavinia sold for the most and worked as a parlor maid, so she must've been quite light-skinned and attractive. They paid a lot for Henrietta, too, but she only had two children, so that was a bad investment, but not as bad as Ida Belle, who escaped twice before finally getting away for good."
Edit: I should mention that, according to Jasmyn (my friend) and the historian, Ida Belle's sisters, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews were each branded every time Ida Belle escaped.

A healthy 18-year-old slave could be bought for $650 in 1845. (About $14,500 in today's dollars.)
