I just chalk it up to them hearing footsteps where nobody has actually been walking, when they are the only one in the area. If youre aware of where your team is supposed to be, and you hear out-of-place footsteps moving in a pattern other than casual walk, youre gonna be like "what the fuck? Whos here with me?"
