Edit: This blew up a bit. I'm really impressed with the positive feedback regarding doctors using Google appropriately in front of patients. As a few have pointed out, a big part of good Googling is selecting the right bits of information to search on, using the professional terminology. The right keywords to describe the location and nature of pain make a big difference, for example, as does knowing which elements of your life are potentially relevant. Physical examination is an important skill which can make all the difference to narrowing down possibilities.

I'm all for patients Googling things themselves as well. I want to know what you've found and what you're worried about, because it can give me clues about what's going on, and I can't reassure that you don't have HIV/cancer/lupus/meningitis/diabetes/whatever if I don't know that's what you're worried about.

He is overqualified for the job.... he didn't try looking it up on the computer that has no internet connection
