My parents split up fairly early in my school years, and dad wasn't always around much. In the 2nd or 3rd grade, we went to a Texas National Guard base on a school field trip.

We were touring a transport aircraft when a teacher pointed to the pilot's names painted on the side and asked if I knew one with my same last name. I did. It was my dad's plane.

He wasn't on duty at the time, but the rest of the crew let me tour some of the spaces the other kids weren't allowed to see.

So that was cool.

I've heard stories in the Air Force about three generations of sons flying the same B-52. Not the same type of aircraft, the exact same B-52 carried the pilot's father and grandfather.
