Toilet literally exploded on me in hotel. They want me to pay. I swear I’m potty trained. I’ve never heard of this happening to anyone. Help! : legaladvice

So I’m not a huge person. I’m a female 5’8” 190. We were staying at a small hotel with no staff at night. Around 11 pm i sat down on the toilet, i probably sat back and the tank literally exploded/ shattered on me. Water poured out. My husband and i panicked and immediately tried calling the front desk. We tried shutting off the water but the valve was literally painted shut. We couldn’t turn it. We were using garbage cans to scoop water into the shower. Someone finally comes like 15 minutes later and has to use a tool to shut the water off bc it’s impossible to turn bc of the paint. Thinking back and after talking with a plumber friend, the toilet was definitely not flush with the wall. It was to far, that’s the only reason i can think that it exploded. I’ve been potty trained for 34 years and have never ever had this happen or heard of it happening. Now, 8 months later they’re sending me a half ass bill that only includes a receipt for $245 in carpet cleaning and a letter saying they want $500, which includes $255 for a toilet (no receipt). They are threatening that it “could’ve” costs thousands for ceiling damage in the lower room, mold etc. which they clearly didn’t do. So we should just pay the $500 and be happy they aren’t asking for more. They said that i sat back aggressively or kicked the toilet. I mean I’ve had to pee badly before but wouldn’t say I’m an aggressive toilet sitter. And why on earth would someone kick a toilet tank, you’d break your foot. My thoughts are that if the valve wasn’t painted shut, there’d be no water damage, the toilet was placed against code. And how on earth does a toilet explode?? Do i actually owe this? Bc it seems the hotel should be lucky i wasn’t cut by glass by their faulty toilet placement. Any input is appreciated.

ETA: since i just got trolled for being fat and apparently smelly. I understand I’m not at an ideal weight. I’ve had two kids recently. I was just putting that in bc i don’t think I’m that big that i would break a normal toilet.

I'm quite tall and recently used an AirBnb where the toilet seat hinge bent and broke off early on during a week of completely normal use. It was a seat with a thin metal arm that clearly had been there for a while and metal fatigue charged it to break. Repairing it would have involved buying a new, €4 bracket and screwing it on.

Lady at the AirBnb told me it'd cost €200 and demanded that I pay half. I was not impressed.

pretty sad when a 190lb new mother is saying things like “i understand i’m not an ideal weight” on LA

Who are the loons that just sit around the Internet all day waiting to harass some woman for her weight? It’s seriously everywhere, if you go in some massive sub like r/pics and a woman is in the photo, I can pretty much guarantee no matter what the woman looks like, you’ll see two things: 1) sexually agressive comments and 2) people whining about her body. Anyway, that’s my rant, sorry for the harassment LAOP, obviously no normal, functional furniture would be broken by you merely sitting on it.

The hotel is crazy. I could see breaking off the toilet seat if you did something wild, but I don’t think I could break a toilet tank with just my body if I tried. I’m not going to test by kicking one though, pretty sure my toe and not the toilet would shatter.
