When my daughter was 3 she came back from daycare saying "What the hell is that?!" One of the siblings said it to another kid and they all picked it up.
We tell her to say "What in the world" instead, but she says "What in the what" which we're ok with, but apparently it formed a weird association with censorship for her.
I never really made a big deal about bad words anyway, so she's heard stuff like "shit" but figured on her own that it's something adults say and not kids.
Fast forward a year or two. We're driving in Texas and hungry. We pull into a Whataburger to eat. When we're inside she hears the name of the place and decides to inform us in front of everyone- "Whataburger is what kids say, adults say Shitburger."
