You can get great exposure playing for free sometimes, but it's not common.

If you were able to play in front of thousands of people who like your style of music, that could be good. It could make them want to buy your album or book you for their gig.

Playing in front of 50 people eating, where half would rather you'd stop, doesn't benefit you at all.

Better even yet. We will give you ticketts to sell for your own free show at our club that you will be playing , not for free but for the valuable exposure and free advertising for your up and comming band. Oh by the way you are on a bill with five other bands and the only one getting paid will be the head liner (agnostic abortion) and they are only getting half the ticketts sales.
