Is it legal for my school to do this? : legaladvice

Hey guys, so recently my school has had a string of fire alarms being falsely triggered by people smoking in the bathrooms. In response to this, our principal has installed security cameras in our bathrooms. I feel this is a violation of personal privacy and shouldn’t be legal but I’m not too familiar with laws behind privacy especially for minors. Also, is there a way to complain about this to some authority so it can be dealt with if installing cameras is indeed illegal? Thanks My school is a school in California by the way.

Edit : I wanted to give some more context to our security camera situation. I know that to many of you, installation of a security camera in somewhere as private as a bathroom seems absurd but our school is a special case. When I mentioned a string of fire alarms, I did not mean two or three fire alarms over the span of a month. Our school has had nearly 20 false fire alarms in the course of the 2 month year we’ve had so far. It is absolutely insane how often the fire alarm is triggered and it is not only costly for the school as well as local rescue resources, it also disrupts classes and slows down the entire school in terms of academics. I dunno, i just wanted to kind of give an explanation of sorts to what I’ve stated above :/

The idea of schools removing stall doors to keep people from smoking pisses me off. Setting aside that it's hard enough being a middle or high schooler without that bullshit, how the fuck does removing the door help? If they're smoking, you can tell because there's smoke. What are kids going to do, crouch on the toilet seat for the rest of the day? It blows my mind that there are people who don't have a problem with this, but apparently there are:

That’s what prompted me to ask. My daughter will be in middle school next year and she’s freaking out about this. 6th grade is when it starts. No one but me seems to think it’s an issue. I live in a community that thinks “safety” is more important that anything, including dignity.

Sounds like something my middle school would've tried to pull. After we had a couple of bomb threats, they posted guards outside the bathrooms and probably would've installed cameras if they thought they could get away with it.

ULPT: If you want to smoke cannabis in school toilets, have a wank at the same time. The footage will be unusable
