Theres a piece of the crown in a controlled environment next to the Declaration of Independance in DC.
Because its held in Nitrogen, its never corroded and is still the original copper.
Edit - It was there when i visited,but that was near 10 years ago. According to some folks in the comments its been moved to the Americam History museum.
I'm pretty sure that this is supposed to be a representation of what it looked like in 1886. I don't think they we're trying to convince people that this was an actual photo from then.
I like that so many people here are missing the fact the facepalm is meant for the person sharing and misunderstanding the point in the comparison picture.
Ended up with a bunch of facepalm fodder in facepalm thread :D
