My mom did this with us when we were kids. She’d tell us “trash hurts Mother Earth” and I remember believing that the planet could literally feel pain caused by garbage.
Might be a little extreme but honestly, 9/10 childhood. Would raise my own kids this way.
Edit: It warms my heart to have so many people upvote my upbringing. To paint a bigger picture of my childhood, I’d like to add that on these garbage walks my mom would let us collect little things from nature. Picture little shinysmileygirl waddling along with a trash bag in one hand and a canvas tote slung over her shoulder. We couldn’t take any growing things, no moss or live leaves/sticks. But she’d let me collect acorn tops, pinecones, stones, bits of wood, feathers. I still have a few of these things. Yes, I’m a sentimental hippie child at heart. Reddit, meet Alexander.

Have I got a sub for you. r/detrashed is all about people cleaning up their communities like this, just cuz it’s the right thing to do.
