Stories like these, and of Veterans not able to get health care should be on the front end of Medicare for all adverts and political ads.

Why is the insurance scheme called COBRA?

Could they not have come up with a name that sounded even a tiny little bit less sinister?

To put this in perspective: I worked at a call center that helped people apply for all different kinds of public benefits from your SNAP and Medicaid to your obscure tax rebates and bill assistance programs. We worked in one state only (the organization worked in several states but each of us would only focus on one) and we specifically targeted people 65 and older (although it wasn't required, any person of any age could call in).

We would hear these stories ALL DAY, EVERY DAY. And I literally (not figuratively) mean ALL DAY, EVERY SINGLE. FUCKING. DAY. Day in and day out. Constantly. Every single one of us who worked on the phones. I eventually had to quit, because the stress and transference was overwhelming. I went home depressed and angry every single day, and spent mornings FORCING myself to go to work. I had calls that STILL haunt me over a year later--I still think about some of those people and hope they were able to find help. I had people tell me if it wasn't for their grandkids or other family members they would just give up trying to get their medicine and let themselves die. What the fuck are you even supposed to say to that? I don't even have the words to describe just how downright evil and depraved and fucking CRUEL this system is. None of them feel sufficient to me anymore.
