When I first read this comic I still believed in Santa, so I thought the joke was that Santa (an adult) would rather have a beer (an adult thing) than cookies (a kid thing). It wasn’t until later that I realized Calvin’s dad was talking about himself.

I remember one of the strips where Calvin finds an old picture and asks "who's that bimbo you were with Dad?" and the dad responds "That bimbo is your mother!". As I got older I remember being somewhat impressed by that strip and all it represents. We think of our parents as kind of static old people who raise us, but they were once virile youth too, some of them were studs and bimbos. It also shows just how great of a family Calvin has, not every man ends up marrying the "bimbo" he was in a picture with decades ago, most relationships don't last that far.
