Around the start of 2000, my grandad got hammered on E&J Brandy asked me to play a cd of Billie Holiday on my Dreamcast. We listened to Strange Fruit on repeat and he told me about growing up in Birmingham, Alabama and how he would walk with his blind neighbor to do errands. Said he was 10 when they were out walking and there was a crowd gathered around a tree.
The blind man asked my grandad what was going on so he described in great detail a black man hanging from a tree, tarred and feathered. We were in tears for what seemed like hours as he described the horrors he'd seen growing up before he joined the armed forces in WW2. That was also the first and last time I'd seen him so drunk.
