A few people have commented that this is an exception to the norm, or that maybe this never really happened, but I don't think it's as rare as they think.
I went to high school with a kid with downs syndrome, and we used to hang out with him all the time. He was more popular than some of the shy, nerdy freshman wallflowers, and the cheerleaders would often let him sit with them at lunch.
I think that the real exception is actually being an asshole to the kids with special needs.
