My best friend in high school got hooked on dope when we were about 22. I didn’t see her much after then. My friends and I still reached out all the time and offered whatever we could but she was pretty unresponsive. In bouts of sobriety she’d reach out to the old crowd again and we’d all accept her back with open arms, just for her to disappear again shortly after. She OD’d at 27 and I still kick myself for not stopping it. Logically I know I did everything I could have but there’s always that piece of me that wonders what would have happened if I reached out that morning or the night before.
