Timeline of challenge to Section 377.

The first challenge to Section 377 IPC in the Supreme Court came in 1994, when an NGO--AIDS Bhedbhav Virodhi Abhiyan--filed a petition seeking scrapping of the law.

The next major challenge came in 2001 when Naz Foundation, another NGO working for prevention of HIV/AIDS, entered the legal battle with a petition in the Delhi High Court seeking decriminalisation of homosexual act in private between two consenting adults.

Since then, the matter has gone through a long legal battle.

In 2009, the Delhi High Court had read down Section 377 and decriminalised homosexuality.

However, the verdict was turned down by the Supreme Court in 2012. »
