A pair of ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz has been recovered by the FBI in a sting operation 13 years after being stolen

The shoes, often said to among the most valued props in movie history, were taken from a Minnesota museum in 2005, when someone broke in through a window late at night.

The FBI unveiled the slippers at a press conference on Tuesday, revealing that a "credible" tip last summer led to their return.

At the time of the theft, the pair was insured for $1 million (£775,000) but experts believe they could be worth at least twice that.

The FBI said a man approached the insurer in summer 2017 and said he could help get them back. After a nearly year-long investigation, the slippers were recovered in July during a sting operation in Minneapolis.

The slippers' authenticity was verified by comparing them with another pair at the Smithsonian's American history museum in Washington DC.

Key point, there were more than one pair. This is why you folks have seen them elsewhere. - "The shoes are one of four known pairs that Garland wore as Dorothy in the 1939 film. They disappeared in the middle of the night in August 2005 from the Judy Garland Museum in the actress' hometown of Grand Rapids, Minnesota."
