Pearl Jam, Mike Shinoda, and more join suicide prevention campaign

Members of Pearl Jam, Linkin Park, and Stone Temple Pilots are just some of the latest names to join the I’m Listening mental health and suicide prevention campaign.

As Billboard notes, the second annual I’m Listening campaign is set to take place on September 9th in the US, with a two-hour broadcast to help kick off National Suicide Prevention Week.

While last year’s campaign featured the likes of Metallica and Halsey, this year will feature some of the biggest names in the world of rock and pop.

In addition to Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps and NFL player Barret Robbins, the campaign will also feature members of Third Eye Blind, Nothing But Thieves, and Halestorm, as well as Alessia Cara, Bebe Rexha, and 30 Seconds To Mars’ Jared Leto.

In a statement, Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda explained that his debut solo album, Post Traumatic, was a “journey out of grief and darkness” that he experienced in the wake of bandmate Chester Bennington’s untimely passing.

“In most parts of the world, suicide claims more lives than war, murder and natural disasters combined,” Shinoda explained. “I hope that sharing my personal story, in music and conversation, helps open up the door to new discussions and awareness about mental health.”

Likewise Alessia Cara (who appeared on Logic’s 2017 suicide prevention track ‘1-800-273-8255’) also expressed her to desire to provide others who suffer from issues of mental health to become more open and seek help.

“In my forthcoming album The Pains Of Growing, I touch on being lost and lonely and stuck inside my head,” Cara explained. “I’ve recently dealt with anxiety – and understand what it was.”

“I definitely want to reach as many people as I can,” she continued. “Hopefully, if I talk about mental health, it’ll help other people to talk about it… we’re all a lot more similar than we think we are.”

I’m Listening will broadcast worldwide from September 9th at 7am in the US, which means you can expect to tune in to Entercom and Radio.com from around 9pm that evening if you want to check it out.
