I have an old Time Life book with a collection of their best pics. This was a two page feature and used to make me cry just looking at it.

"Many years later, Mr. Jackson recalled that when he began to play, ''it seemed like every nail and every pin in the world just stuck in me.'' ''The photographer stumbled over my foot and looked up,'' he went on. ''He saw my face and saw those tears coming down my cheek, and he just reached around on his shoulder and got one of his cameras and - blip - and thought no more of it.''"

The photograph was taken by Edward Clark of Life magazine and has been widely reprinted.

FYI Jackson wasn’t just a random service member, he was a close personal friend of the Roosvelts.

He had been playing music with them the day before, that’s why he was in Warm Springs with him when FDR died. You can see that is some real personal grief on his face.
