Always try to approach all dogs from their eye level and reach under rather than over and let them smell you first.

My five year old asks every person we see with a dog if she can pet it. The other day she asked a woman who said “You sure can!” Then as my daughter approached she said “be careful, sometimes he bites.”

Pretty sure that’s when you say no, don’t pet my dog.

Edit: My daughter and I spend as much time as possible on various hiking trails and in parks. We pass tons of dogs, and we love dogs. I’ve taught my daughter the proper way to approach a dog, so she’s quiet, gentle, and lets them smell first. I am also selective on who I let her ask. If someone is jogging intently, or just doesn’t seem interested in us I tell her to pass on that dog. The dogs we pet belong to people who notice my little girl focused intently on their dog and will often times offer without being asked. Most people greet us with a smile when they notice, and they have no problem at all letting us meet their pup. It’s fun for the dog, it’s fun for my kid.
