Michael seems to have a deep rooted need to impress people. He thinks of the people around him as an audience, and himself as the performer. But with those he is very close to, such as Jim, Pam, and Holly, he doesn't seem to feel that need as much. The same could probably apply to Dwight but Dwight always wants to play the role of audience member to Michael so Michael indulges him.

Jim, Dwight, Pam and Holly were his closest friends. You really see the connection between Jim and Michael in Michael's final episode. He didn't need to impress Jim, and Holly adored his goofyness (Yoda impressions everyone). I loved all their friendships
