I do love this quote, but I can't help but be reminded of the warnings to not follow your passions, or the survivor bias that someone like Bill is bound to possess as one of the most successful cartoonists in history.
This seems like such great advice, but it ignores the main reason why so many of us get up every day and struggle with a demanding job that we hate. It's not to climb some imaginary ladder or to live a life of avarice and success. I do this just to survive.
I wish I had the luxury of an undemanding job that affords me the time to pursue other interests and activities. But if I worked any less than I did right now I would be getting my electricity shut off or an eviction notice on my door.
