I used to sit in the desert of Afghanistan eating MRE’s daydreaming about having a home with a garden with fresh food. Years later, dream achieved.

Being in Iraq changed my view on the world so much. Before my first deployment I was already concerned with the food I was eating but after I saw the Iraqi people living off of the land, independent and self sufficient, I knew I had to do something different. They were even eating healthier than us in the states.

So I vowed to one day have my own small farm, being as self sufficient as possible with clean fantastic tasting food. We have had our farm for three years now. Slowly building up an old hunting cabin and land in west central Illinois.

It can be stressing and difficult at times. No holidays or time off for animals. But the rewards are indescribable. I really feel whole and in touch with life, my surroundings, the world.

“Farewell, Master Burglar. Go back to your books and your armchair, plant your trees, watch them grow. If more people valued home above gold, this world would be a merrier place.”
