(CNN) Someone has stolen the identity of the oldest living veteran in America and emptied his bank account.

The family of 112-year-old Richard Overton said they don't know how a thief got Overton's social security and personal checking account numbers.

They discovered the issue Thursday when one of the World War II veteran's cousins made a deposit into his account.

"I looked at it -- what the hell are these debits?" Overton's cousin, Volma Overton Jr., told CNN affiliate KXAN.

Several purchases of saving bonds with Treasury Direct were made in recent months and by Thursday there was nothing left in the account.

Huh, something similar happened to me a couple of years ago. About 20 unauthorized (by me personally at least) debits to one of my checking accounts. Even my shitty bank was willing to sit down with me, go over each debit, and get that money back to the cent. Even the overdraft fees caused by the final 3 debits was refunded.

So why can't this guy's bank do the same?

They will definitely get caught: they drained his account by buying saving bonds with Treasury Direct. The only way to cash those out is by going to a bank collecting it in person, or have the Treasury dept deposit the money into their account (either way, you'll need to show in person at the bank to open that account).

Even if they used Fake ID's, and got professional makeup artists to fake their looks, the bank has security cameras. Also, the bank might have the account already flagged because the victim is high-profile. There was no way to rip him off without getting caught.
