A local man was arrested in a nationwide operation targeting online child sex offenders, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

"Operation Broken Heart" targeted suspected online child sex offenders during a three-month, nationwide operation between March and May.

"No child should ever have to endure sexual abuse," said Attorney General Jeff Sessions. "And yet, certain forms of modern technology have facilitated the spread of child pornography anf created greater incentives for production."

According to Sessions, more than 2,300 alleged child sex offenders have been arrested nationwide, and 25,200 sexual abuse complaints have been investigated.

"Any would-be criminal should be warned -- this department will remain relentless in hunting down those who victimize our children," said Sessions.

As part of the operation, officials arrested Andre Thorpe, 35, of Roxboro, who faces numerous charges, including producing child pornography and transporting a minor for sex. Thorpe is accused of sexual abuse of a minor victim over a period of years.

2,300 in a 3 month span?! That's incredible and disturbing. I was aware that this was a problem but I seriously didn't realize how many potential threats were out there. Scary.
