My mother is slowly losing the ability to walk due to a neurodegenerative disorder and wanted to visit Hawaii with me before the inevitable. It took 10 hours but she managed to hike 12 miles in and out of Haleakalā in Maui. This is the view of the rim upon the first 2800 ft descent. [4032×3024] [OC]

I didn't know one could hike down there. There are spots that can make you feel like you are on Mars.

I’m so happy for the both of you but at the same time it makes me incredibly sad. My dad has always wanted to go to Hawaii but hasn’t gotten the chance. I fly out tomorrow to see him since his health is rapidly declining. There is no telling how much longer he has but he is definitely not strong enough to take the trip he has always wanted. Cherish every minute you have with your loved ones!
