Had a patient once that needed CABG (open heart surgery) and refused his surgeon because he wasn’t a white American (surgeon was Indian) created such a scene. So we ended up consulting the whitest American surgeon we had. The patient loved him. The surgeon was Cuban.
Reminds me of a kid in my high school. He was playing with a switch blade and it fell into his leg stanning his femoral artery. In the hospital bleeding to death with his finger plugging the hole, made a huge scene trying to refuse a blood transfusion accusing the hospital of trying to put "hindu blood" in him.
I've had surgery twice in my life and on both occasions (at two different hospitals) part of the process was being asked a bunch of questions including whether I minded if my surgeon was female, of a different race, etc.
WTF? All I said was "if the surgeon is qualified and has done this before, I'm good."
