Margot Kidder, the actress best known for playing Lois Lane in the Superman films, has died aged 69, TMZ reports.

The actress reportedly passed away at her home in Montana. No cause of death has been confirmed.

Kidder starred with Christopher Reeve in four Superman films from 1978-87 as the caped crusader's love interest, Lois. She also shared the screen with Peter O'Toole in a 1983 TV production of George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion, and would later appear in the TV Superman prequel Smallville. In 2002, Kidd performed on Broadway in a production of The Vagina Monologues.

She struggled with bipolar disorder for many years, after being diagnosed with the condition after a manic episode in 1996, in which she was found in a disorientated state, having apparently been living outdoors and sheltering in bushes in Los Angeles for several days. She later used her public profile to raise awareness about the condition, and became an advocate for alternative medicine.

She is survived by her daughter Maggie, the daughter she had with her first husband, American novelist Thomas McGuane. Kidder and McGuane divorced in 1976 after three years together; she later married The Sopranos actor John Heard in 1979, a marriage which lasted only six days. Her third marriage was to the French director Philippe de Broca, from 1983-84.

Kidder was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, which was the cause of a widely publicized manic episode that she experienced in April 1996. At the time, Kidder had been working on an autobiography, when her laptop computer was infected with a virus, which caused it to crash and her to lose three years' worth of drafts. Kidder flew to Los Angeles to have the computer examined by a data retrieval company, who ultimately were unable to retrieve the files. Kidder then entered a manic state and disappeared for four days. She was found in a backyard by a homeowner and was taken by the Los Angeles Police Department to Olive View Medical Center in a distressed state, the caps on her teeth having been knocked out during a rape attempt. She was later placed in psychiatric care.

Wow, that's pretty rough. RIP

She was just on a podcast (Drew and Mike) a few days ago. Sounded a bit off, but she was with it and really funny. She was planning a visit to the Motor City Comic Con.

"You've got me!? Who's got you!?"

RIP Margot. Glad I got to meet this woman years ago at Boston Wizard World. Such a light in a conversation, she had amazing stories.
