Story time: the day a whole laboratory freaked out.

I want to tell you a story my pediatric professor once told us. A couple was expecting its third baby, after having lost two children due to a severe hereditary genetic disease. Mother and father asked a prenatal screening to verify if the baby had inherited the same condition too. Now, sometimes you may discover from DNA tests or blood group that a father is not "compatible" with his alledged baby... but when BOTH parents are genetically unrelated to the baby YOU. FREAK. OUT. For a couple of days the laboratory tried to find out what went wrong, when and where and if there had been a specimen mix up. In the end, they called the couple and explained they had to retake the tests and why. At this point, the even more unexpected happened: the couple candidly told doctors they had gone to a fertility clinic abroad for their third pregnancy (without bothering to mention it before). The baby was the result of an embryo donation from healty donors...

Tl; Dr: couple thinks their not genetically related baby may inherit the genetic disease they carry. Chaos ensues.

Edit: I would like to add that gametes or embryos donation, as well as preimplant screening for genetic diseases, was illegal in Italy (where this happened) until few years ago. Prenatal genetic counselling and screening is offered to couples with a clinical history for a specific condition.

Fun fact! There was once a women who almost lost custody of her kids because it was found she was not related to them. Despite having carried them for 9 months and given birth to them, their DNA did not match hers.

Turns out she was a chimera and her eggs had a different DNA set to the rest of her body, so her kids were genetically different from her.
