A little background info from the photographer:

I stopped these gentlemen in the downtown crossing in Boston when I was assigned to do a photo essay on teen street fashion (mid-80’s).

After seeing the image in my portfolio a year or two later a business periodical asked to use the image. They said it was to illustrate an article on low employment among Boston youth. I was flattered they liked the image, but I had no idea whether these men were employed or not. I was assured the photo would simply be representing ‘Boston youth’, so I agreed. Not too long after, I encountered the young man who’s holding the boombox in the photo. He told me when the article was read by his co-workers they cut out the photo and posted it on a bulletin board at the law office where he was employed.

I apologized and explained what had transpired, but I think we both had mixed feelings about it. He was a working man, no matter what the article said. I think what the what the photo says was… he was stylin’.

That style has come all the way back around - this could almost have been taken today
