I agree with the sentiment, but want to point out that all old growth forest is not a goal of conservation. Healthy ecosystems are mixes of habitats with good connectivity. Other classes of habitat, like Healthy prairies, are just as important. Old growth forests actually have pretty low species counts /biodiversity. Some species are old growth obligates, but many species require things like fire to keep forests open and usable. For example, species like the Kirtland's warbler will only nest in big stands of 5-20 year old jack pines. It's easy to forget that ecological communities have a temporal component.
