Now to be fair the reason why the man wanted nothing to do with her was because she was basically raping him through the use of love potions and when she stopped using them he left.
Harry isn't a hero wizard dude. He's a regular kid who was forced into extraordinary circumstances and adjusted to the responsibilities thrust on him. Neville would have done the same there's a reason the hat took so long to sort him and ended up on Gryffindor. Dumbledore himself said in the book that the prophesy could have referred to two boys but Voldemort sealed Harry's fate when he marked him. The prophesy simply mentioned a boy born at the end of July with surviving parents in the Order of the Phoenix. No Harry = Voldemort going after Neville. And given that Nevilles parents chose to be tortured into madness rather than give up info I have no problem believing one of them would have sacrificed themselves as Lily did.
