The Expanse returns, bringing its ambitious sci-fi back to Syfy

Here’s what’s happening in the world of television for Wednesday, April 11. All times are Eastern.

The Expanse (Syfy, 9 p.m.): Three seasons in, The Expanse remains that all-too-rare creature, a smart and sophisticated space opera also willing to let monsters rip apart the hulls of ships. Tonight’s premiere is titled “Fight Or Flight,” which, isn’t the show usually doing both? Regardless, Zack Handlen will be on deck to report back.

Conan Without Borders: Italy (TBS, 10 p.m.): Conan O’Brien sets off on another of his signature trips abroad, this time to Italy. Feel free to go ahead and start the betting pool on how many minutes into the show he makes it before uttering, “That’s a spicy meat-ah-ball-ah!”

If you need some convincing to watch the series let this be it. Easily the best sci-fi production in a very long time. What I love about the sci-fi genre is the world building and the ability to go in depth about every single little detail about how things are different in this fictional world. So many franchises nowadays are just futuristic violence and drama but the Expanse is truly the sci-fi book genre come to film.

So glad this is back. My #1 favourite show. It feels like an age since the last series.

I just started watching The Expanse on Amazon Prime. I'm about 8 episodes into season 2 and I cannot believe how good it is. None of my friends or family have seen this show. I didn't even know it existed until a couple weeks ago because I don't have cable. I'm positive that if this was on HBO or AMC or something everybody would be hailing it as one of the best shows on television. The story and characters are both just so strong. Amos might be one of my favorite characters I've ever seen in television. I hope it gets its full run and completes its story without being cancelled. I have no idea how popular it is on SyFy.
