At least they believed him. Joseph Goldberger investigated pellagra in the US in the early 1900s. The disease gave you dementia and skin necrosis. It was bad. People assumed it was caused by a bacteria. But Goldberger discovered that dietary deficiencies were the cause. To prove it, he injected himself and a group of friends with fluids from the victims. None of them got pellagra. His findings were rejected on the basis that not enough women were included in the trial. So his wife participated in the next "filth party."

In the end, they nominated him for a Nobel prize four times, but he never received one.

Edit: I mistakenly thought he was nominated after death. Whoops.

Both of my daughters contracted H. pylori. They were both miserable. The eldest actually prompted the doctor to test her for it because the doc said it was unlikely she had it. I can't imagine how they'd be if there was no cure. Thank you Dr. Marshall.

H.pylori is now the standard text book bug you study when learning about stomach ulcers. In MT school they cram this down your throat.
