So much stuff gets posted to this sub that's actually just like unfinished work or a misunderstanding and not a terrible design.

This is TRULY a terrible design.

Any dryer will function similarly if / when the air intake screen gets enough lint over it. This restricts the air flow over the heated wires. The air flowing over the heated wires is what cools them. If you muffle your expensive new dryer it will probably do similar. Some dryers have a safe design component to recognize overheating. If you try this at home, restricting the air intake your dryer may sense this and turn off. Over heat fail-safe may not reset when things cool off. Melted fuse.

Could be user error. Holding or laying the hair dryer too close to an object could cause this.
