HP releases new germicide-resistant computers for hospitals

HP announced a new line of laptops, displays, and all-in-one desktops resistant to intense cleaning materials for people who work in hospitals and doctors’ offices.

There are three products. There’s HP’s EliteOne 800 Healthcare Edition All-in-One desktop, there’s the 27-inch HP Healthcare Edition Clinical Review Display, and there’s the EliteBook 840 Healthcare Edition notebook.

The laptop lets you disable the keyboard and touchscreen while cleaning, so that nothing is accidentally inputted. All three products are built to withstand deterioration from being cleaned with germicidal wipes, which may help reduce the spread of health care-related infections.

HP has included a few other features specifically meant to help hospital workers. The Notebook’s touchpad recognizes touch from people wearing surgical gloves. The notebook, desktop, and display also have RFID readers so that workers can sign in by tapping their work badges on the touchpad. The notebook also has a fingerprint reader.

HP has security measures in place to address the risk of health care records being stolen. The HP EliteBook has a physically isolated security controller, which will supposedly make it more difficult for hackers to access. It also has a privacy screen so that onlookers can’t read the screen from the side.

The Elitebook is slated for release in May, while the display and desktop are expected in June.

I hope they last better over the years. All the computers in the health system I know are these monitor/pc ordeals that are so gunked up with dust the fans run full till at all times. It's really annoying to have this machine bleating for a mercy killing while I'm trying to make the most of a 45 second conversation with my doctor.

I do IT for a bunch of nursing homes, and some housekeepers really know how to wreck a laptop with their cleaning spray. I get them back with this white crap all over the screen and the keyboard, and green rust in the inside parts.
