George Lucas seriously considered having Luke turn to the dark side and ruling with Vader at the end of the film because Lucas was a in a dark period of his life. (You also see this reflected in how dark Temple of Doom is). He was talked out of it, but the whole film retains a lot of imagery to have the audience wondering if Luke was going to turn to the dark side.

Luke wears black. He force chokes two Gamorrean guards in Jabba's palace (though it happens so quickly that a lot of people miss that).

I think RotJ has the perfect ending, but I do wish the film built up a little more tension with Luke wondering if he was destined to turn to the Dark Side. Obi Wan lied to him. He had the vision in the cave, etc. If we saw some of that internal conflict in the film, I think it would have been even more powerful when Luke says:
