[OC]Zebra Canyon will soon no longer be a part of Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument and will no longer be protected by the US Government [720x960]
Finding it difficult to read the draft plans, but as far as I can tell Coyote Gulch, which houses the incredible Jacob Hamblin Arch, will not be protected either.
I hiked through Coyote Gulch this past summer. The landscape is unbelievably beautiful and it would be a tragedy to lose it. These are your public lands that Trump is attempting to steal and sell to private industry for a quick buck. We should all be furious at this.
When Secretary Zinke visited Escalante 6 months ago, he refused to meet with the Chamber of Commerce from Escalante and Boulder City. Reason being, is that even though Chamber of Commerce's typically lean conservative, they were both prepared to come out in opposition of the re-designation, as both areas have profited mightily since becoming a National Monument. Ranching and coal mining revenues for local communities pale in comparison to that of tourism and recreation. If large mining leases and operations began in the area, that could significantly impact local economies. The BLM is a grossly underfund agency that does little to "protect" the areas it serves, as we've seen from the rampant pillaging of sacred native sites in Utah and Nevada (ex: Bundy). This also calls into question once again Native Sovereignty. Since this move of rescinding a National Monument is unprecedented, this will likely be tied up in the courts past Trump's Presidency, and will hopefully be retroactively negated by the next administration.
